How we raise money

In an ageing population, more and more people are affected by macular disease. It is therefore more important than ever that we raise as much money as possible to fund research into treatments and to find a cure, as well as continuing to provide information and support for those with macular disease.

Our funding comes from three main sources:

  • charitable trusts and the National Lottery
  • membership subscriptions and donations
  • gifts in Wills and donations in memory.

Our fundraising activities include appeals both for research and services; corporate sponsorship; a weekly lottery and raffle; promotion of events such as runs; our popular Catch up with Cake parties and recycling schemes. We aim to ensure that all our activities are transparent, fair, honest, and legal.

We are extremely grateful to all our wonderful supporters for every donation. Together we can help thousands of people in the UK today to cope with the effects of macular disease.

How we spend money

Between 2024 and 2025, the Macular Society invested its funds to support people living with macular disease and to drive progress towards more available treatments and a cure.

Fundraising

We spent £3.1 million on fundraising activities, which enabled us to generate the income needed to deliver our services and fund vital research into macular disease.

Support services

We spent £3 million on services for those affected by macular disease, including:

  • Patient information and advice
  • Peer support and counselling
  • Local support groups
  • Low vision training

These services help people live well with sight loss and reduce isolation by connecting them with practical and emotional support.

Research

We spent £1.6 million on macular disease research, helping scientists improve understanding of the condition, develop new treatments, and work towards a future cure.
