Eye care services in Wales described as 'fragile'

Eye care services in Wales have been described as 'fragile' by the Healthcare Inspectorate.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) said ophthalmology services in hospitals did not have enough capacity to meet demand.

The demand on services leads to patient backlogs, breached waiting times targets with potential for "avoidable harm to patients".

HIW looked at wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but its report said there were similar failings in treating other eye conditions.

They said they were frustrated that despite several plans and initiatives these problems still remain unresolved.
