Preliminary applications are now invited for 2017 grants

The Macular Society is now accepting preliminary applications for research grants and PhD studentships beginning in 2017. 

Applications for clinical or laboratory-based research projects aimed at improving the treatment or quality of life of patients with macular disease, will all be considered.

Projects must be able to demonstrate potential benefit to people with macular disease, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and macular dystrophies. This may include research into causes and prevention, early detection, treatments or improving the quality of life.

Research Grants of up to £170,000 over three years are available for research at UK institutions only. PhD Studentships of up to £100,000 are also available to support the training of a graduate student for three years. Students should be based at a UK institution and be a UK graduate in a relevant subject.

The Society is one of the few sight loss charities that actively fund and support research into macular disease. During the past 15 years we have donated more than £2.8 million to research projects, thanks to the generous donations of our members and supporters. 

The Macular Society has been awarded an Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) Best Practice in Medical and Health Research certificate. The audit confirms that the Macular Society uses robust methods to make decisions about which research projects to fund and that it supports the best researchers and the highest quality research.

The deadline for preliminary applications is 5pm on 30 June 2016.

A final decision will be made by the Board of Trustees in April 2017.
