What is Wear Yellow Day?

Wear Yellow Day is a fun way to raise money and awareness for eye health on behalf of the Macular Society. It’s a day where you gather your friends, family, colleagues or community together, wear as much yellow as you can, and ask people to donate.

Who can organise a Wear Yellow Day? Anyone!

Join us on 24 September!

Let’s all come together and wear yellow on 24 September. Organise your own Wear Yellow Day at work, with friends, or in your community to raise money and Beat Macular Disease.

How to organise a Wear Yellow Day

There's no right or wrong way to do a Wear Yellow Day. It could be a small celebration with a few friends or colleagues, or a big event for your whole workplace or community.

Here we outline our best Wear Yellow Day tips:

Choose when and where

You can hold a Wear Yellow Day on any day that works for you. You could also link your event to an eye-health awareness date, for example:

  • World Optometry Day - every 23 March.
  • National Eye Health Week - the last full week of September.
  • World Sight Day - the second Thursday of October.

You can organise a Wear Yellow Day at work, school, a club, a community group, an optician’s practice, a local park, online, or at home with friends and family.

Invite people to participate

Ask colleagues, friends, family, or members of your community to join you. To collect the most money and make the most out of your Wear Yellow Day, you could promote your day across different channels. You could invite people through email, posters, WhatsApp, newsletters, workplace intranets, and social media.

Here are some actions you can take before, during, and after your Wear Yellow Day:

  • Before the day: Tell people what you're doing and when. Invite them to join!
  • On the day: Take photos to share on social media and tag the Macular Society. Encourage participants to share on their social media channels too.
  • After the day: Share how much money you raised and thank all participants.

Decide how you will raise money

Set yourself a fundraising target, so you and your participants have a specific goal to work towards. Depending on if you want to raise money in-person or online, you have several options.

You could:

  • Create an online fundraising page.
  • Ask people to donate a set amount to participate in the event.
  • Put out a collection tin.
  • Ask your employer to match what you've raised.
  • Ask local businesses or your employer to sponsor the event.

Make it fun

You can go as big and bright as you want! To get participants excited, there are several activities you can do for your Wear Yellow Day.

You could:

  • have a yellow outfit fashion show or competition
  • decorate your workplace or venue
  • have a wear yellow photo competition
  • host a yellow-themed party where everyone brings a yellow food or dessert
  • decorate your clinic windows, if you're an optician or ophthalmologist.
