Moorfields Eye Hospital is supporting a global awareness day, which highlights rare diseases and the impact they have on patients’ lives.

Rare Disease Day takes place on Monday 29 February and the eye hospital will be focusing on diseases such as Stargardt’s disease, retinitis pigmentosa, birdshot uveitis and achromatopsia.

As part of the activities the hospital will be hosting a web chat with consultant ophthalmologist Professor Michel Michaelides between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, which will give staff, patients and the general public a chance to ask him questions about rare eye conditions.

Retinal disorders overtook diabetes as the third leading cause of severe sight impairment in England and Wales in 2013.
