Peter Sallis OBE 1921-2017

The Society is very saddened to hear of the death of Peter Sallis, one of our much-loved patrons.  He was best known as Norman Clegg in the long-running British TV comedy Last of the Summer Wine, and reached an even wider audience as the voice of cheese-loving inventor Wallace, in the animated Wallace and Gromit films.

Peter was diagnosed with macular degeneration in 1996 and joined the Society as a member in 2009.

Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “The Society was privileged to have Peter as a patron and we will always be grateful for his generous support in making a number of appeals on our behalf, including one on BBC Radio 4 in 2005 and another in 2009 for the BBC’s Lifeline programme.

"Everyone at the Society would like to pass their condolences to his family and friends, and everyone else around the world who will miss his unmistakeable voice and warm manner.”
