Fundraiser in the spotlight on ITV's Love Your Garden

Posted: Tuesday 24 July 2018

Tune into ITV tonight to watch one of our inspirational fundraisers and volunteers in the spotlight on Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden.

Betty Richards, a long-serving volunteer for the Society, has macular degeneration and describes her vision as akin to looking through net curtains.

The 91-year-old was nominated for the show in recognition for her hard work as a volunteer throughout her lifetime. Just last year Betty abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower, raising £4,200 for Society.

The team’s aim upon visiting her garden was to transform the drab, concrete space, which was a dangerous trip hazard for Betty with its multiple levels.

They set about making a safe, Italian-inspired sensory haven full of colours visible to Betty’s failing eyes.

Betty, who runs a support group for people with macular disease in Hampshire and fulfils a number of other volunteer roles for the Society said: “It was like a rollercoaster ride. The whole thing has been magical.

“I have received recognition and a few awards for my charity work, but that is not why I do it. I do it for the sheer love of it, I do absolutely love what I’m doing.”

Tune into ITV at 8pm to see Alan and his team take on the challenge.
