First in series of webinars for different types of macular disease

We will be launching our first in a series of condition-specific webinars for patients later this month.

The first event, which will take place on 30 July, will be focused on myopic macular degeneration and will be hosted by Professor Jeremy Guggenheim from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University.

Myopic macular degeneration is also known as Myopic maculopathy and causes similar symptoms to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but usually at a younger age.

Prof Guggenheim, who is currently conducting research into the causes of myopia (short-sightedness) and methods to prevent the condition, will discuss how myopia in childhood can affect you later on in life.

He has previously worked on studies looking into the genetics of myopia, as well as epidemiology studies of lifestyle risk factors, research into experimental models of myopia, and analysis of gene-environment interactions.

The event is the first in a series of webinars aimed at providing more information to patients with different types of macular disease.

Colin Daniels, the Macular Society’s Working Age and Young Peoples’ Service Manager, said: “We want to continue to support people with all types of macular disease, including providing the best advice and support.

“These webinars are a chance for people with rarer types of macular disease to keep up to date on the latest information about their condition. They are also a great chance to hear more about the latest research taking place to help find new treatments and a cure for their condition.”

The talk will take place on Zoom on Thursday 30 July at 2.30pm, with registration opening at 2.15pm.
