New director to help accelerate progress in macular research

The Macular Society has appointed Dr Erika Kennington as its new director of research, strengthening its commitment to increasing research funding for macular disease.  

Dr Erika Kennington, who is currently head of research and innovation at Asthma+Lung UK, will be joining the Society on 1 September, taking over from Dr Peter Bloomfield who was the Society’s first-ever director of research.  

Erika holds a PhD in cardiac physiology from King's College London and has worked as a research funder and strategist in the charity and not-for-profit sector for 17 years, with a specialism in respiratory medicine.  

Research leading to better treatments 

Prior to working in the charity sector, Erika worked as a published researcher in industry and academia, specifically in health and biomedical sciences. 

She has always been interested by the science behind human health and disease, especially how medical research can lead to better treatments. In recent years she has developed a passion for ensuring research leads to actual impact for those affected by health conditions and plays a role in reducing health inequalities. 

Erika said she was excited to join the Society at what is a pivotal time for research into macular disease. She hopes to continue to build on the organisation’s commitment to increase research funding to speed up the development of new treatments and, ultimately, find a cure.  

 “It's such an exciting time for ophthalmic science,” she said. “I am thrilled to join the dedicated team at the Macular Society to drive forward pioneering research into macular disease, which has a devastating impact on the lives of so many people."

She added: “I'm looking forward to collaborating with top global researchers to accelerate new treatments and turn scientific potential into life-changing realities for people with sight loss.”
