Cathy Yelf has been Chief Executive of the Macular Society since February 2015, having first joined the Society in 2008 as Head of External Relations. Before working in the charity sector, Cathy had a long career in journalism, mainly at the BBC. She is also a Trustee of Action Against Age-related Macular Degeneration, a collaboration of four sight loss charities established to find new therapies to stop early AMD developing into the blinding forms and sits on the Executive Council of the Association of Medical Research Charities.
Director of Fundraising and Marketing
Emma joined the Society in 2018 as the director of fundraising and marketing, previously holding the position of associate director of fundraising and supporter engagement at Rethink Mental Illness. She began her career with the Royal Academy of Music and has also held senior positions with Prostate Action, Prostate Cancer Research Foundation and Dyslexia Action. In her role at the Society Emma is responsible for leading the fundraising and marketing to achieve our ambition to Beat Macular Disease.
Director of Services
Tessa Barrett joined the Society in 2016 and is the director of services. She is responsible for overseeing the provision and development of the charity’s support and rehabilitation services. Before joining the Society, Tessa was chief executive of Open Sight, Hampshire’s largest charity for visually impaired people. She has also held roles with national charities, including St John’s Ambulance and Action on Addiction.
